Reggie Ndlovu, a SuperSport TV commentator, has discussed when Kaizer Chiefs fans should expect head coach Arthur Zwane to fight for the DStv Premiership title.
In the just concluded season, Zwane had his first full season as Chiefs’ head coach, and after high hopes of competing for trophies, the Glamour Boys ended another season (eighth in a succession) without a trophy, finishing fifth in the DStv Premiership rankings.
Ndlovu believes it is “fair” to expect ‘Mangethe’ to produce a trophy in his first season and that supporters should demand one in his second season.
“Arthur Zwane had an entire season to test his combinations.” “I think if we’re being realistic, you’re under pressure in your first season, and the team hasn’t won a trophy in eight years,” Ndlovu said in an interview with colleague Thomas Mlambo on Vodacom Diski Chat.
“It’s fair that you take the team to the top eight in your first season.” Second season, put him under pressure and tell him, ‘Okay, give us at least one trophy.’ There’s MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup, and Nedbank Cup.
“At the very least, give the team one trophy and compete for the league in the third season.
“I believe that if supporters can be patient and look at him personally, if you say you haven’t won a trophy in eight years, what about the previous coaches you gave a chance, did they give you anything? So let us be fair to Zwane and give him a chance,” he urged.
The youthful isiZulu analyst went on to discuss where he believes the Chiefs need to improve next season.
He mentioned Amakhosi’s strike force and defense, notably the goalkeeper, as areas that would require significant adjustment during the offseason.
“Obviously a couple of players (signed), I think upfront they’re struggling because if they’re going to rely solely on Ashley Du Preez…” he said.
“You have an experienced Itumeleng Khune, and I believe Khune still has something in him,” says the coach. For me, I’d put him in because I believe his leadership qualities…
“A couple of the goals they conceded last season came at the near post.” It alludes to defense and organization within the box. “Are you communicating with your goalkeepers, telling them what to do and where to cover?” He enquired.
