Chelsea fans were treated to a frenetic January transfer window as the squad’s transformation under new owner Todd Boehly continued, with eight new arrivals costing more than £300 million in transfer fees.
To cap off their spending spree, they broke the Premier League transfer record by signing midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in a deal thought to be in excess of his £106 million release clause.
Earlier this month, the Blues snatched Mykhaylo Mudryk from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £87 million. A further £100 million or more was spent to sign players such as Benoit Badiashile and Noni Madueke.
Chelsea had only one major departure from their squad, as midfielder Jorginho joined Arsenal in a deal worth around £12 million. The Italy international’s contract at Stamford Bridge had only five months left on it.
Meanwhile, the club had no other outgoings as Hakim Ziyech’s loan move to Paris Saint-Germain fell through, despite the Moroccan international being expected to complete the move after spending deadline day at the French club’s offices. Chelsea are said to have sent the incorrect paperwork for a deal to be completed, causing a move to fall through.
