Former Kaizer Chiefs player and sportscaster Marks Maponyane has spoken in on the future of Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane.
The Chiefs had a disappointing season, which has put coach Zwane under intense pressure. He has sparked debate among Chiefs legends.
Zwane guided the Soweto giants to one of their worst Premier Soccer League (PSL) seasons, and after failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League, he will end the season empty-handed this weekend. This sparked a passionate debate about Zwane’s future at Naturena, with some yelling at him and others pleading for him to be given another chance.
Maponyane spoke up, explaining the ramifications of Zwane’s removal from Kaizer Chiefs.
“Who else will you change if you change him?” Let me take you back in time; you’d know we’ve come as far as [Steve] Komphela, [Ernst] Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, you can rattle them”. Maponyane stated this. While he inquired of Soccer Laduma, “what has been happening?”
Chiefs defeated 1-0 to SuperSport United at the Royal Bafokeng stadium in Rustenburg over the weekend, infuriating the club’s fans, who tossed sharp items at Chiefs personnel.
Zwane was hurt in the eye by a police shield while they were attempting to defend him from irate supporters.
Not such good news as the Kaizer Chiefs issue a statement regarding the Arthur Zwane incident!
Maponyane’s sentiments contradict those of Shane McGregor, another Chiefs star who believes Zwane is not the ideal man for the Soweto giants.
The Chiefs’ final game of the season is against Cape Town City on Saturday, and it might have a significant impact on Zwane’s future. A loss to the Citizens could mark the end of Zwane’s tenure as manager.
