Chelsea were ousted from the Champions League by Real Madrid, extending new manager Frank Lampard’s four-game losing streak to zero goals. Chelsea’s only realistic goal now is to escape their first bottom-half Premier League (PL) finish since 1995/96, although even that is far from assured given their five-point deficit to tenth-placed West London rivals Brentford.

Chelsea vs Brentford: While the Blues are still looking for their first victory under interim manager Frank Lampard, the Bees have yet to win in April.

Chelsea’s European hopes appear to be dashed, as they presently rank 11th in the Premier League table, 20 points behind the top four and 11 points behind the top seven. Lampard’s immediate goal is to guide the Blues into the top half of the table in order to prevent their worst league result in 27 years (11th in 1995-96).

However, Chelsea and Brentford, both in poor form, will clash in a West London derby at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, as Chelsea hosts Brentford in the Premier League.

Team News

Chelsea will face Brentford on Wednesday without Kalidou Koulibaly and Armando Broja due to hamstring and knee ailments, respectively, though the former might return to first-team action early next month.

Although Frank Lampard is able to welcome back Ben Chilwell, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and David Datro Fofana after the quintet were either suspended or ineligible to face Real Madrid; both Chilwell and Badiashile appear to be the most likely to be recalled as Lampard considers switching to a four-man backline or sticking with a 3-5-2 set-up.

Lampard may elect to reintroduce Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling to the starting lineup after they came off the bench against Real Madrid.

N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Enzo Fernandez should all keep their places in the starting lineup.

Brentford’s Pontus Jansson will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.

Brentford were unlucky not to beat an in-form Aston Villa at the weekend, but Thomas Frank was “proud of the players” after an impressive performance. Despite the excellent performance, the Bees’ winless streak now stands at six games (D3, L3), leaving them six points behind seventh place, the lowest possible position to secure a European spot for next season.
