According to Emmanuel Petit, Chelsea is paying the price for a chaotic summer transfer window and cannot afford to make any more mistakes. The Blues were the biggest spenders in world football last summer, with Boehly authorizing a £300 million spending spree on players such as Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Raheem Sterling.

Petit believes the club made a series of ‘panic buys’ last summer and believes the club must change its approach to avoid a repeat.

Former Chelsea manager named as Zambia coach

It’s been a very difficult season for Chelsea,” Petit said in an interview with Mega Casino.

“When I look at some of their players, especially Thiago Silva who was so distressed after what happened with Brazil, there are many question marks. There are numerous issues surrounding so many people at Stamford Bridge.

“The pressure is on Graham Potter because I can’t remember the last time Chelsea won a game, especially against the big guns. We all know that 2022 was a bad year for Chelsea off the field, but I’m not optimistic that things will improve in the second half of the season.

“I’m not sure what Chelsea will do in the transfer market, but they spent so much money in the summer already. I got the impression they didn’t have a vision; it felt like panic buying.

“It appeared that if they couldn’t get their primary or secondary targets, they were signing players because they needed to. If a player became available, they bought him, or so it appeared from the outside.

“Chelsea must return to managing the club before all of this trouble” (Roman Abramovich sanctions and sale). I’m sure they will, but Chelsea will be in transition this season.

“The competition for the top four will be fierce. Now you have Newcastle, who are not playing in Europe and do not have many players who were impacted by their participation in the World Cup. They will be available during the transfer window. They will improve the overall quality.

“The Champions League is likely to be contested by seven or eight clubs. Chelsea must exercise extreme caution. They must also exercise extreme caution in managing the next two transfer windows.”
