After another defeat, Chelsea manager Graham Potter stands the very real possibility of losing his job at the Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea struggles to even place in the top half of the rankings in the Premier League, which is an unfamiliar situation for them. After losing against Aston Villa 2-0, they are currently ranked 11th, therefore ending their chances of qualifying for the Champions League through the league.
This would be concerning for the club under normal circumstances, but following a record-breaking summer and January spending totaling more than £600 million, it is quite embarrassing for the London based club.
It’s hard to tell if Graham Potter is the problem or if he just needs more time. It’s easy to make snap judgments when you look at a team’s performance and Graham Potter has only been with this particular squad for a few months.
Time may be the biggest factor in his success, as he’ll need to get to know the players and their strengths, the club culture and its supporters, as well as find a tactical approach that will fit the team’s unique qualities. Patience may be the key to getting results. Perhaps with more time and experience, the former Brighton manager may just prove to be the solution.
Clearly, Potter is being blamed because he joined the team in September after Thomas Tuchel was fired. The former Brighton manager was supposed to be able to change things around at Chelsea, but that hasn’t occurred.
Graham Potter’s results in charge of Chelsea has a positive record in that, although barely, he has won more games than he has lost. The 47-year-old has presided over 31 games, 11 of which have already produced a loss. In comparison, he has 12 victories under his belt at the Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had only won one of their 11 games in 2023, a 1-0 victory at home over Crystal Palace, before going on a three-match winning streak before the March international break.
The Blues have scored 33 goals overall and given up 31 goals under the tutelage of Graham Potter. And in his first six games in charge, when he also won five victories, they scored 13 of their goals under the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager.
Since then, things have drastically worsened for Potter and Chelsea, and it’s possible that his final game in charge was the 2-0 loss to Unai Emery’s team.
